How to care for a basketball jersey

Comment entretenir un maillot de basket

An NBA Swingman or Authentic jersey is not just a simple t-shirt. Its polyester mesh fabric, sublimated prints, and heat-pressed applications require precise care to stay in perfect condition season after season. Here’s everything you need to know depending on your jersey type.

Basic rules at a glance

🔄 Wash inside out Flocking protected from drum
🌡️ Maximum 30°C Never hotter
💨 Air drying Flat or on hanger
🧴 Mild detergent Without enzyme or brightener
🚫 Tumble dryer Degrades mesh and adhesives
🚫 Fabric softener Damages technical fibers
🚫 Bleach and strong detergent Irreversibly discolors
🚫 Iron Polyester and mesh background

Step-by-step washing

1
Pre-soak if necessary

For jerseys worn during an intense session, a 15-minute pre-soak in cold water with a spoonful of mild liquid detergent is enough to release odors and sweat stains without damaging the fibers. Do not rub: the mesh fabric is delicate and rubbing damages the mesh.

2
Turn inside out before putting in the machine

Essential. Turning the jersey inside out protects the heat-pressed flocking and prints from drum friction. This is the simplest and most often forgotten rule. Every wash without exception.

3
Delicate or synthetic program, 30°C, reduced spin

Choose the gentlest program on your machine: delicate, synthetic, or wool. Temperature: maximum 30°C. Spin: reduce to 600 rpm or less. A strong spin distorts the mesh fabric and marks the edges of the prints. If your machine allows, disable spinning and let the jersey drip dry naturally.

4
Remove immediately at the end of the cycle

Never leave the jersey balled up in the drum after the cycle ends. Moisture combined with compression can create permanent creases in the mesh and promote odors. Remove it as soon as the program finishes.

5
Dry flat or on a wide hanger, air dry

Turn the jersey right side out, lay it flat on a clean surface or hang it on a wide hanger with rounded shoulders. Never on a drying rack with clips that would mark the fabric. Keep out of direct sunlight to preserve colors, in a well-ventilated room to prevent moisture from lingering in the mesh.

Swingman vs Authentic: two fabrics, two approaches

Swingman Edition

Standard polyester, thicker and more durable mesh. The easiest version to maintain: it tolerates 30°C without any problem, standard spinning (600 rpm), and air drying without needing to lay it flat. More margin for error.

Authentic (Player Version)

Ultra-light fabric with microperforations, many heat-applied patches, numbers and logos in a thin layer. Requires cold water (max 20°C), minimal spinning (400 rpm or none), and essential flat drying. Any mistake on this fabric is immediately visible.

Stain SOS: what to do depending on the type

Sweat and persistent odors

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment. Vinegar neutralizes bacteria responsible for odors without damaging the fabric. Never mix vinegar and detergent in the same cycle: they chemically cancel each other out.

Grass or dirt stain

Let dry completely before treating. Gently brush the dry area with a soft brush, then apply pure dish soap directly on the stain and let sit for 10 minutes before starting a 30°C cycle.

Grease or food stain

Sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch on the fresh stain, let absorb for 15 minutes, then brush off. Apply pure degreasing dish soap by pressing it in without rubbing. Wash at 30°C.

Deodorant (white or yellow stains)

Rub with the rough side of a dry microfiber cloth on the stain. For old yellow stains, apply a mixture of lukewarm water and lemon juice, let sit for an hour, then wash normally. Avoid baking soda as it can damage some synthetic dyes.

The special case of the collector or signed jersey

A signed or collector’s jersey should never be machine washed. The signature, depending on the type of marker used, can deteriorate when exposed to water and heat. If the jersey is new and unworn, keep it without washing.

If the jersey was worn before the autograph and shows light stains, spot cleaning with cold water using a clean microfiber cloth on the dirty areas (not the signature) is preferable to a full wash. Let it air dry flat, never in the sun.

Golden rule for an NBA jersey Never use a tumble dryer, regardless of the version. The mesh, numbers, and patches on NBA jerseys are designed for air drying. A single tumble dryer cycle can be enough to peel off the appliqués or irreversibly shrink the fabric.
