A football jersey does not get stained like a T-shirt. Polyester does not retain water, but it does retain grease, and synthetic fibers trap odor molecules that cotton releases in the first wash. As a result, a grass stain treated too late becomes permanent, and a collar that turns yellow never turns white again on its own. The good news is that almost all of these stains can be treated with four products costing less than ten euros in total, provided you use the right method in the right order.
The three-hour rule
The factor that determines the result is neither the product nor the temperature, but the timing. A fresh stain sits on the surface of the fibers. As it dries, it oxidizes and becomes embedded inside the polyester thread, where no ordinary detergent can reach it. On a jersey left rolled up in the bottom of a sports bag for two days, the success rate drops dramatically, whatever product is used afterward.
This three-hour window is a practical average. With a grease stain, you have a little more leeway. With blood or grass—two stains rich in proteins and plant pigments—the window is shorter, and treating it within the hour completely changes the final result.
The stain-removal kit: four products and nothing else
There’s no need to accumulate specialized sprays. Four products cover every stain a jersey encounters over its lifetime, and they are all compatible with polyester and elastane.
What is deliberately missing from this list: bleach, which attacks polyester and turns colored fabrics pink, and fabric softener, which deposits a greasy film on technical fibers and prevents them from wicking away sweat.
Grass and dirt, the stains from the pitch
Chlorophyll is a powerful natural dye that binds to fibers. It is football’s most stubborn stain, and the one least forgiving of delay.
- Rinse with cold water, turning the jersey inside out to push the stain outward rather than further into the fabric.
- Rub wet Marseille soap directly onto the area without diluting it, then massage the fabric against itself with your fingertips.
- Leave it to work for twenty minutes, never in the sun.
- If a green shadow persists, dab it with a cloth soaked in 70-degree household alcohol, working from the edge toward the center.
- Then wash at 30 degrees on a delicate cycle.
Contrary to expectations, mud is easier to treat when dry than when fresh. As long as it is wet, rubbing it simply spreads mineral particles over a larger surface.
- Let the mud dry completely, for several hours if necessary.
- Remove the crust by hand, then brush it dry with a soft-bristled brush.
- Rinse off what remains with cold water, then soap the area if an ochre shadow persists.
Sweat, rings, and yellowed collar
This is the most common and most poorly treated category. Yellowing in the underarms and collar is not dirt in the usual sense: it is a chemical reaction between sweat salts, aluminum salts from deodorants, and detergent residues accumulated over successive washes. A regular cycle, even at high temperature, will not remove it, because the problem is not grime but buildup.
The treatment combines gentle mechanical action with an oxidizing action. It takes time, but it works on jerseys you thought were beyond saving.
- Make a paste: three spoonfuls of baking soda to one spoonful of lukewarm water.
- Apply to the yellowed area, massage with your fingertips, and leave for one hour.
- Rinse, then soak the entire jersey for four hours in a basin of 30-degree water with one tablespoon of percarbonate.
- Wash normally at 30 degrees, without fabric softener.
A jersey that smells of sweat again as soon as it is worn harbors bacteria lodged in the fibers, protected by a film of fabric softener or excess detergent.
- Soak for one hour in one liter of cold water and one glass of white vinegar.
- Wash at 30 degrees with half the usual amount of detergent.
- Air-dry, never use a tumble dryer, which bakes the residue into the fibers.
Blood, grease, and beverages
Blood is a protein-based stain. Any heat source coagulates it and sets it irreversibly, which explains most failures.
- Rinse immediately with ice-cold water under the tap, with the fabric turned inside out.
- For an already dry stain, soak for two hours in cold salted water, using one tablespoon of coarse salt per liter.
- Finish with Marseille soap, then wash at 30 degrees.
Polyester is oleophilic: it attracts grease instead of repelling it. An oil stain therefore becomes highly visible and resists a simple wash.
- Absorb the excess with paper, without rubbing.
- Sprinkle generously with Sommières earth or, failing that, talcum powder or cornstarch, and leave for two hours.
- Brush off the powder, then apply a drop of grease-cutting dish soap to the area.

Colored but superficial stains on synthetic fabric, provided they are not left to dry in the sun, which sets them through oxidation.

What you should never do
One final, subtler mistake: applying several treatments to the same area within a few minutes. Vinegar is acidic, while baking soda and percarbonate are alkaline. Mixed directly on the fabric, they neutralize each other and do nothing at all, creating the false impression that the stain cannot be removed. Always rinse between products.

Gray is not a stain but a deposit of limescale and detergent residue spread over the entire surface. Soak the jersey for four hours in water at 30 degrees with one tablespoon of percarbonate, then wash it with half the usual amount of detergent and half a glass of white vinegar in the fabric-softener compartment. Two cycles spaced apart produce better results than one very long soak.
