The quarter-final: France vs Morocco

Quarter-final — 2026 World Cup France vs Morocco
Date: Thursday, July 9, 2026 Time: 3 AM (French time) Stadium: Gillette Stadium, Boston Winner faces: Portugal or Argentina

An unprecedented clash in the World Cup final phase. The two teams have already met in friendly matches (2-0 for France in 2023 in Lille, 1-1 in Rabat in 2024), but this is the first time they face each other in a knockout match. Morocco eliminated Canada in the round of 16 (3-0, Ounahi brace), after already passing the group stage. The Atlas Lions, semi-finalists in 2022, have matured since that edition. For France, it’s a familiar opponent but in a radically different context.

This match recalls 2022

In the Qatar semi-final, France beat Morocco 2-0 in one of the most emotional matches of the tournament. The Atlas Lions were the first African country in history to reach this stage, driven by remarkable defensive organization and an extraordinary bond between the players and their supporters.

Three and a half years later, Morocco reaches the quarter-finals with roughly the same qualities, but with more experience and confidence. Revenge is not officially a motivation for the Moroccans. But it is on everyone's mind.

In the semi-final The winner of France-Morocco will face the winner of the quarter-final between Portugal and Argentina. If Messi and his team advance, it would be a France-Argentina semi-final, the fourth edition between the two teams in the World Cup final phase.
