At the far eastern edge of Andalusia, between the Mediterranean and the arid landscapes of the Tabernas desert, Unión Deportiva Almería carries the colours of an entire province. Nicknamed the Indálicos, after the Indalo, a prehistoric figure that has become the emblem of the region, the rojiblanco club embodies a southern football proud of its roots. By following its seasons, supporters also discover the other teams in the country, gathered in the section dedicated to Spanish La Liga.
A young club with a rapid rise
Founded in 1989 as Almería Club de Fútbol, then renamed Unión Deportiva Almería in 2001, the club did not take long to make its mark. In 2007, with Unai Emery on the bench, it earned its first promotion to the Primera División, then finished eighth the very next season, ahead of several historic institutions of the league. Since then, the team has alternated between the top flight and the second division, and every return among the best is celebrated across the whole province.
The Juegos Mediterráneos stadium, looking to the future
Built for the 2005 Mediterranean Games, the club’s stadium hosts matches under one of the sunniest skies in Europe. Its athletics track long kept fans away from the pitch: a renovation project plans to remove it to bring the stands closer to the grass and increase capacity, giving match nights an even more intense atmosphere.
From the Mediterranean to the Andalusian Atlantic
Regional clashes set the rhythm of the Rojiblancos’ season. After the games against their Costa del Sol neighbours, supporters keep a close eye on trips to western Andalusia, notably against Cadiz CF, another club driven by a port city and a particularly passionate crowd. These matches link the two shores of Andalusian football, from the sea to the ocean.
Comparing with clubs across the continent
Fans who enjoy discovering other sporting identities can continue their visit on the page dedicated to the must-know clubs of European football, to compare colours, histories and supporter traditions across the continent.
Wearing a Unión Deportiva Almería football jersey means showing off the red and white stripes of a young, ambitious club deeply attached to its Andalusian land. A shirt that appeals to supporters of clubs with character and to lovers of football from the south of Spain.
