  • Place it directly in the tumble dryer inside out (reverse side visible).
  • Choose the lowest available heat setting (delicate or low temperature program).
  • Start a 20 to 30-minute cycle and check the jersey’s condition halfway through.
  • Remove it while still slightly warm and manually stretch it in the desired areas if necessary.

Specific risks of tumble drying a football jersey

The tumbling motion in the drum generates repeated friction on the mesh fabric. This friction, combined with heat, can cause pilling, wear the edges of the flocking, and alter the characteristic texture of the mesh. For an Authentic jersey or a collector's edition, tumble drying is a risky choice that's hard to justify.

The real limits of shrinkage on polyester

Here is the truth that most guides don’t clearly say: if your football jersey is made of pure polyester (which is the case for the vast majority of official Nike, Adidas, Puma, New Balance jerseys sold since 2000), no home method will make it shrink significantly and permanently.

Polyester is a synthetic fiber whose molecular structure is fixed during the manufacturing process. Unlike natural fibers (cotton, wool), it does not have hygroscopic properties that would allow it to contract under the effect of humid heat. Size variations observed after a hot wash on polyester are often temporary and related to slight fabric deformation, not structural shrinkage.
